Description

Gum 15, a region of vigorous star formation in Vela, is a pretty heart-shaped nebula that appears to be ionized by the young stellar object HD 74804. This star has a Gaia parallax of 1.082 mas, which would put it about 924 pc away.

I was surprised to be able to get a halfway decent image of this object. It was about 10 degrees above the horizon; at home in Illinois that would have yielded a smudge. I binned (HaR)GB 3x3 for color, removed stars with StarXTerminator, then upscaled back to 1x1 and blended in Halpha luminance to recover some details. The stars were added back in from the RGB frames at 1x1.

Image produced from exposures taken at the Casitas de Gila guest houses in SW New Mexico.
